Sandwich Showcase: The Original Pita Club at Darrell’s

Darrell’s is most famous for its peanut butter burger and crunchy peanut butter shakes – but Darrell’s “World Famous Pitas” (really?) also have a strong following. The Original Pita Club, dating back to 1992, is described thusly:

“A Darrell’s time honoured favourite. Real turkey (roasted on site daily), crisp bacon, romaine lettuce, sliced tomato, cheddar and mayo.” 

It is $12.79 and comes with your choice of fry (there are several varieties) or salad.

The fries are nothing special, and I haven’t had the salad. Do as you wish.

I was dining with food fanatic, Michael Dinn, who insists that the Pita Club is better with peanut butter. So we ordered a regular pita and a peanut-buttered-up one.

As for the Original Pita Club Wrap – it was good! The pita is nice and soft and warm, cradling real turkey (roasted on site daily?!). The bacon was perfectly crispy, and the romain lettuce was wrapped up with the pita, so as to balance out the ingredients. There was a little bit of everything in every bite, rather than big mouthfuls of lettuce chased by bites of bacon and cheese. This is perfect wrap construction!

I really enjoyed the classic club flavours in this lovely soft pita presentation.

As for the peanut butter…. well, it’s good. The peanut butter makes this a very rich meal, and it detracts from the “club house” flavours. But for all you peanut butter lovers out there, there is a peanut butter club wrap for you. It’s at Darrell’s and it has Michael Dinn’s stamp of approval.

I will vouch for the Pita Club as a perfectly acceptable sandwich.

I also had a peanut butter vanilla shake, which reminded me how great the milkshakes are at Darrell’s.

It’s soon time to re-evaluate the burger situation…
